The Twin Parlors

When it comes to historic treasures, Rockwell’s twin parlors are the definition. These grand rooms were built as twins with matching cornices, wainscotting, mantels, and decorative trim. They’re used today as the primary gathering spaces just as they would have been in the 19th century.

The twin parlors are also home to our largest restoration project in the home. The rear parlor’s details were sold to the Winterthur Museum in Delaware in the 1970s as a way to raise money after a fire significantly damaged the home. The room is currently on display as the Georgia Dining Room.

In 2020, we partnered with craftsmen from the American College of Building Arts in Charleston, SC, to replicate the missing material. They used the historic material in the front parlor to draw profiles and perfectly recreate the items for the rear parlor. For smaller intricate details – which were originally hand carved – we scanned and 3-D printed pieces that have been integrated into the woodwork. Finally, in 2021 our craftsmen used a similar process to rebuild the missing mantel to make these parlors twins again.
